For the fourth release on Camera Obscura's special projects sub-label Camera Lucida we have the final recordings by Boston folk-meets-space-rock ensemble Abunai!.
The release contains three tracks:
A. "Two Brothers" (7:29) and "Lord Hampton (live)" (3:23)
B. "Two Brothers (version)" (15:20)
The A-side version of "Two Brothers" is a rich brew, touching on all of the best elements the band fused during their time together: touches of the psychedelic, the progressive, early-70s German kosmische and UK folk rock. It's all there in an utterly unique reading of the Child Ballad (#49) that straddles the spiritual and the secular, the Apollonian and the Dionysian. Side A is rounded out by a jagged live folk-punk-rock blast through the original-in-traditional-stylee "Lord Hampton" whose spiky guitar blasts and screw-you vocals are propelled by a rhythm section fit to power a starship. The extended space-dub version of "Two Brothers" on the B-side is both a stunning head-trip and a haunting valedictory gift by a band we wanted to hear so much more from.
