The Lazily Spun's debut album was assembled over three years at various home and commercial studios and rehearsal spaces in Manchester and Liverpool, and features the involvement of virtually all members that have passed through the band's ranks in its checkered history. Driven by Matt Woolham's superb songwriting and hauntingly melancholic vocals, and aided by a recording aesthetic that gives equal weight to acoustic balladry and staggeringly layered and complex soundscapes, the album has the kind of dizzying reach for masterpiece status that characterized the Olivia Tremor Control's "Dusk at Cubist Castle".

Dazzling psychedelic pop songs like "Neither Dreaming" and "Cubic Zirconia Smile" swirl and collide with the downstream float of folk-psych ballads like "New Kneads", "My Alibi" and "Sea of Me" and paranoid-visionary jewels like "Equals" and "Non-Ionic Surfactants" for once justify that most overused of comparisons - Syd Barrett. The psilocybin-fueled hub of the album is the 15-minute mini-suite "Psurreality Psong" which takes studio craft into zones rarely entered and is hilarious to boot. The concluding "Blue Mask of Pan" is a freewheeling tribute to vintage tribal folk-psych freak out from a variety of samples including, according to Harry: "Amon Duul, Skylab, Brainticket, Astralasia, Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, wolves, and a bunch of Amazonian DMT insufflators".

The band's name derives from classic experiments performed in the 1950s whereby flies were injected with various drugs (mescaline, cannabis preparation, LSD, and caffeine) and then fed to the spider Zilla-x-notata Cl. The webs produced by the spiders were then analyzed. Webs spun under the influence of LSD and mescaline were documented to have been "lazily spun".
