Camera Obscura Records is pleased to announce the release of the fourth Primordial Undermind album "Beings of Game P-U".
Relocation from the west coast of US to Austin in Texas has allowed band mainstay Eric Arn to completely reinvent the Undermind sound as a conduit for the extended forces of improvisation. One key to the reinvention is the presence of Tom Carter, whose time with the Mike Gunn (then) and Charalambides (now), and understanding of the divinity of both acid rock and free guitar improvisation brings another sympathetic lobe to the Group Mind. Another key is spontaneity - all recordings were first takes with no subsequent overdubs.
"Uva Urtana" clarifies the shift with its 15 minutes of spacey freedom for guitar, violin, electronics and percussion. It's an ocean of tonal bliss for the purposes of total immersion and freedom, and its absence of vocals (as with the rest of the album) marks another major departure from the song structures of predecessor CD "Universe I've Got". It's like they've finally achieved sustainable orbit. Although guitars are ascendant throughout, Jared Barron's drumming and Travis Weller's violin are hugely important orchestrating elements, demonstrated by their wail and thunder on the riff-centred "Glass/Spitt/Revelation", which nicely echoes elements of Mike Gunn and previous PU work before crossing into the free zone. And there is plenty of variety throughout, with the influence of Sun City Girls South-East Asian dreaming on "Louse Dances for Laos", and the band's geographical location and the spirit of Roky Erikson's version of "May the Circle Be Unbroken" informing the moonlit desert sweep of the exquisitely beautiful "Liquid Facets", which prints on the grey matter like an Ansel Adams photograph, and is another link to the continuum of Texas psychedelia.
The band will be touring in support of the album in Oct/Nov 2001.
