As
the son of Dave Carter (bassist and vocalist for legendary 60's
psychedelic act Country Weather) Donovan Quinn grew up listening to
the sounds of psychedelia, folk music, and pop. Though he wrote songs
from an early age, it wasn't until 2001 that Donovan began making home
recordings under the banner of Verdure.
Operating in the obscurity of a home studio environment (nestled in
the hilly outskirts of the SF Bay Area) Verdure has recorded three
albums in as many years, and released them in CD-R micro-pressings for
a cult audience. The nature of his music is individual and not easily
identifiable with any one genre; however the lyrical depth, sound
exploration, and attention to song-craft could draw comparisons to
classic acid-folk, the zoned voyagers of the ESP-DISK roster, as well
as the stranger elements of pre-depression folk-blues.
Donovan lists his pivotal influences as Bob Dylan, Incredible String
Band, Captain Beefheart, the Fall, Bruno Schulz, Robyn Hitchcock, the
Modernist & Syd Barrett.
The "Telescope Dreampatterns" is the second Verdure album to
be officially released, following the release of "Cross and
Satellite Station" on Lexicon Devil in 2003.
Along with Verdure, Donovan is also a member of San Francisco's
Skygreen Leopards; part of the so-called Jewelled
Antler Collective (though he denies any involvement in a
collective and emphasizes individuality of expression in his work).
Since recording "Telescope Dreampatterns" he has recorded another
full-length CD entitled "October Lanterns" which was due for release
on Camera Obscura, when Donovan closed down the Verdure project.
