Drummer Piet Collins, bassist Chris Hollow and guitarist Ben Michael X all met whilst scriptwriting for the Australian soap opera "Neighbours". Days spent crafting coffee shop scenes for
Madge, Harold and a stream of teenage starlets drove them to an old karate studio at nights to play experimental soundtrack rock.
A Melbourne fashion label shared the same building and after complaining about the ear shattering sounds decided to feature the band's music on a Helena Christensen led catwalk show. The interest generated meant a film festival contract and a series of live performances being arranged. The trio decided to draft in two friends - singer/guitarist Andrew Tanner and Beck Zack on mellotron - to complete the
line-up.
So far they've played everywhere from alt. country festivals to rave chill out rooms. Special studio and stage guests have included high profile fans like ex-Coral Snake Dave
Graney, guitarist Matt Walker, and Casanovas'
wild man Tommy Love.
Besides their well-received 7" record on Camera Obscura, the Sand Pebbles also feature on two international tribute albums. The "Test Patterns" LP is dedicated to legendary New York avant rockers Television and frontman Tom
Verlaine. The Sand Pebbles perform "Sixteen Tulips" which surfaced on Verlaine's "A Miller's Tale" compilation album.
The Sand Pebbles have also cut a version of the Masters Apprentices' "Living in a Child's Dream" for a classic psych covers compilation on US label
Aether Records.
Their debut full-length CD "Eastern Terrace"
was released in 2002 by Camera Obscura. They have since moved on to
other labels.
