The Green Pajamas are Jeff Kelly (guitar, vocals), Joe Ross (bass,
vocals), Eric Lichter (keys, vocals, percussion), Karl Wilhelm
(drums), and Laura Weller (guitar, vocals).
What started 17 years ago as a collaboration between Kelly and Ross
became a bona fide band with the addition of Karl Wilhelm, with whom
they recorded their first full-length album "Summer of
Lust", and a third song-writing partner and guitarist, Steven
Lawrence. Over a two-year period, from 1988 to 1990, the Pajamas
recorded what would be the last album of this era, "Ghosts of
Love". Jeff, Joe and Karl also performed and recorded songs for
Jeff’s Victorian-inspired project, The Goblin Market. Eventually
they switched focus back to the Pajamas, and released the single Song
For Christina. This release marked the dawning of a new era for the
Green Pajamas and this time the world would take notice.
From 1997 on, the band entered a period of unprecedented productivity.
With the addition of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Eric Lichter,
the band released their first album in seven years, "Strung
Behind the Sun". It was followed two months later by Indian
Winter, a collection of previously released singles. By the end of
1998 they had released an EP, "Strung Out",
and the critically acclaimed full-length "All
Clues Lead To Meagan’s Bed", named by the London Times as
one of the top 10 albums of 1999. With the release of "Seven
Fathoms Down and Falling", their fifth CD in less than three
years, came the addition of long-time friend of the band, guitarist,
vocalist and songwriter Laura Weller to the line-up. An EP titled
"In a Glass Darkly", released on Hidden Agenda Records, was
released in May to critical acclaim, and "This is Where We Disappear", was released on
Woronzow Records in the fall of 2001. Jeff and Laura also revived the
Goblin Market project and released a full-length CD, "Ghostland",
in June 2001. In Jul 2002, Camera Obscura released Narcotic
Kisses, a major retrospective of Green Pajamas rare and unreleased
tracks, on CD (after a very limited LP issue
in 2000), and in November 2002, Camera Obscura released "Northern
Gothic", possibly their finest achievement to date.
Though founder Jeff Kelly is the primary artistic force, the other
band members’ contributions add to the appeal and diversity of the
band’s recordings by bringing their own musical influences and
textures to Kelly’s already flavour-filled material. The result is
carefully crafted records that are worth many a repeated listen. The
band continues to receive significant critical acclaim from the
non-mainstream music press and radio, and enjoy a solid following of
loyal and enthusiastic fans.
